Taiwan might host WBC Asian round: sources

(Mainichi Japan) September 24, 2011
TOKYO (Kyodo) -- Organizers of the 2013 World Baseball Classic are considering having Taiwan host the Asian round amid uncertainty over two-time champion Japan's participation, sources said Friday. Japan has yet to commit to the next WBC, demanding a bigger slice of revenue from the tournament. Major League Baseball and its players' union each received 33 percent of the overall revenue from the 2009 edition, against 13 percent for Japan. The organizers have already informed Japan of the possibility of playing the four-team Asian round in Taiwan in an apparent move aimed at bringing the country in the tournament, the sources said. Tokyo hosted the first round of the 2006 and 2009 tournaments.
